A MANIFESTATION OF OPPOSITION TO THE PROPOSED ESTABLISHMENT OF A DUMPING SITE AT SEMIRARA ISLAND, CALUYA, ANTIQUE.
The people of the Municipality of Pandan, Antique wishes to convey its vehement opposition to the establishment of a dumping site at Semirara Island, Caluya, Antique based on the following reasons:
I. “LEACHATES” a product of the mixture of water and garbage, contain lethal substances such as copper, lead, zinc, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, iron, manganese, nitrogen, bacteria and pesticides are highly poisonous to man, animals and sea creatures.
II. Indiscriminate dumping of garbage in the proposed dumping site will contaminate and destroy the ecological system in the area and likewise, poses risks to the health of the people.
III. Contamination in the area will destroy the marine life around it and the adjoining towns including our municipality, hence, prejudicial to the livelihood of the people.
IV. The proposed dumping site will result to the emerging of a scavenger’s haven in the area, hence, an outrageous slap to the dignity of the Antiqueños.
We, therefore, fervently appeal to the government not to pursue the establishment of a dumping site in the Island of Semirara, Caluya, Antique.
